Maverick the cat makes waves surfing and paddle boarding

A cat named Maverick, also known as Mavi, is participating in water sports including surfing, paddle boarding and wake surfing. The cat travels to various water outings with his owners, Kayla and Nick.

Media outlet The Dodo published a video on Sunday highlighting Mavi's water activities, including footage of the cat walking the nose of a longboard. Mavi's owner, Kayla, described his long-standing comfort around water. “Ever since he was little he was fascinated with all things water,” Kayla said.

Mavi's owners share his activities on an Instagram account, which includes a post titled “Water Training for Cats.” The post suggests setting up boards or kayaks inside the home so cats can get acclimated in advance. It also recommends hosting a picnic on the shore to spend hours introducing the equipment to pets.

The training tips advise allowing cats to practice jumping on and off floats at a lake or river while using food and treats at the shore. The post emphasizes not rushing the process to avoid a negative experience. Owners are advised to ensure their cat voluntarily steps onto the float before leaving the shore.

Mavi joins a variety of animals known to participate in water activities. Other animals seen in surf lineups include goats brought by an owner known as The GoatFather, dogs competing in dedicated canine surf events, pigs and snakes.

According to SURFER, the video of Mavi was published by media outlet The Dodo.
