Colorado skateboarding dog MilliePi named Newsweek’s Pet of the Week

MilliePi, a rescue dog from Colorado known for her skateboarding skills, has been named Newsweek's Pet of the Week. She is joined by finalists Morwyn, a 12-year-old rescue cat, 7-year-old beagle mix Blossom and the canine duo of Luna and Zoe. Newsweek regularly highlights engaging animal stories from its readers.

MilliePi lives with owner Janet Sellers and began her skateboarding journey at eight weeks old. Her unique talent and adventurous spirit captivated readers, earning her this week's top spot. The segment aims to showcase beloved pets and their heartwarming stories.

Sellers, MilliePi's owner, explained the dog's early interest in skateboarding. “She started skateboarding at eight weeks, just standing on the skateboard or sitting on the exercise ball in the living room to keep busy during snowstorms outside,” Sellers said. MilliePi's skills developed quickly. Sellers noted that a “big breakthrough was instead of just hitting the living room wall to stop, she turned around and went the other way.” Beyond skateboarding, MilliePi also retrieves dropped items, fetches pen and paper and shows an aptitude for learning names.

Morwyn, a 12-year-old rescue cat, is owned by H.E. Ellis. Morwyn has a fondness for dressing up and interacting with other animals. Ellis recounted, “I got the baby ballerina onesie after she came out of the bedroom wearing my underwear.” Ellis hopes to train Morwyn as a service animal to detect his nephew's seizures. Morwyn reportedly loves dogs but is sad because her chihuahua boyfriend, Gizmo, moved out of state.

Blossom, a 7-year-old beagle mix, lives in South Carolina with her owner Lourdes Deets. Deets adopted Blossom from a local shelter. Deets described Blossom's gentle nature, stating, “Blossom has the most beautiful eyes, she is very gentle and humble.” Blossom is also very social and enjoys playing with other dogs, regardless of their size. Deets added, “I love that she comes to me for head rubs, she is also very social likes to play with other dogs no matter their size.” Blossom also enjoys car rides, especially when french fries are involved and visits to pet stores.

In New York, the pit bull and Akita mix Luna shares a home with Shiba Inu Zoe and their owner Julie Rudd. The two dogs are described as best friends. Rudd highlighted their bond and habits. “They love looking out the window for squirrels. My favorite thing is how loving and protective they are,” Rudd said. She also noted, “And obviously they love each other.”

Newsweek also recently featured a “key-lime green” puppy born in Florida and a cat's unexpected reaction to its reflection in a mirror.
